![]() I didn’t expect how much I would come to enjoy Mike Shinoda’s rapping, away from the nu-metal aspect, but I really did and I loved how the lyrics felt like nothing else I was hearing from contemporary hip hop in the radio at the time. ![]() The Rising Tied had a special place in my music library in my youth when I also listened to a bit of Linkin Park which I imagine a lot of people have. Fort Minor is a pure hip hop side project that he’s been doing alongside several guess artists like Styles of Beyond, Black Thought, and, John Legend and more. ![]() He is also a graphic artist who’s designed most of the band’s artwork alongside DJ Hahan letalone the artwork for The Rising Tied. For those that don’t know Mike Shinoda, he is the current frontman (I assume) of the band Linkin Park which he co-founded alongside the late frontman singer of the band Chester Bennington. Shinoda showed off his classic rock-styled plectrum work on “Make It Up As I Go.” The stage splashed a hybrid of burnt autumn lighting alongside the throbbing percussive clanking on “Ghosts” before Shinoda led a flashmob of handclaps on “Crossing a Line” and crooned a mesmerizing Roger Troutman-inspired vocoder solo on “About You.Today is the day where I get to post this thread as it has now been 15 years since Mike Shinoda did his first solo act as an artist. Songs from Post Traumatic, which was released last June, comprised a very small portion of the set list. The easygoing Agoura, California raised entertainer gave equal airtime to each of his musical identities, brilliantly balancing between spitting hot bars, tapping fluorescent-colored pads on his beat machine and sampler, tickling the keys, shredding riffs on guitar and of course, paying homage to his deceased Linkin Park co-pilot. Rather than break out with a song from his cathartic debut solo LP Post Traumatic or a selection from any of the seven Linkin Park studio releases, Shinoda unexpectedly opened with “Petrified,” one of the cuts from his hip-hop extension, Fort Minor. Dressed comfortably in a black t-shirt with gold captions, a black skater hat donning his signature font, army green cargo pants, sky-colored hi-top Vans and a pearly white smile the entire time, the consummate performer came onstage to the sounds of a throbbing heartbeat and hues from prism-like strobelighting. ![]() The relaxing Sunday evening didn’t rely heavily on an influx of props, pyrotechnics or gaudy production values. ![]()
